Can I stop the growth or development of Spirogyra/horselair?

Here in the sub-regions of Africa, the flow of tap-water in a few areas is not dependable, and the individual is advised to use large water containers to reserve and use water. Often, a carpet-like substance (spirogyra/horsehair) develop in these containers we use and makes them look so disgusting. it sometimes changes the water's color. this makes the use of the water very difficult and also unattractive.

1. are there health complications with the use of this water in nornal house activities like washing dished, cloths, vegetable, and cooking with it?

2. How could the development of these substances be halted, or could it be prevented permanently?

There are some algaecides available that can be used in potable water tanks and some are safe for use in waters that are used for irrigation of edible crops. Certain algaecides are even safe for fish. Always read the label of any product you are using to ensure you are using it correclty and for the purpose it was designed for.

Diquat is only slightly toxic to fish and if you follow the recommended application rate is followed, you reduce the possibility of harming aquatic life. However, as the aquatic weeds decay, the oxygen level in the pond water begins to deplete. Without the proper oxygen levels, fish may not survive. Using strip applications of diquat will help prevent harm to fish.
