I have been a fan of Bacta-PUR® liquid bacteria ever since I visited some pond managers who had tremendous results treating their ponds with the range of natural cultures from Bacta-PUR®. Bacta-PUR® : Understanding This Safe Bacteria
I have used and seen used the liquid bacteria called Bacta-PUR® ever since I became a beliver after seeing that golf-course. Then I did a little research into this Canadian company who actually "creates" this incrediblble safe liquid pond bacteria and came to understand that this International Company known as IET-Aquaresearch Ltd, based in Canada with offices in Europe, has become one of the most prestigious and premier suppliers of Government Approved cultures for pond remidiation in North America and surely through-out the world.

So let's look a bit deeper at the questions I had about this bacteria by IET-Aquaresearch Ltd .

What is the size of the typical bacteria cells, if I can call them cells, in the product?
In the Bacta-pur mixture, just as in any natural selection of bacteria there are thousands of "strains" of bacteria but with the pond and lake bacteria in these selections there are basically two major groups. Heterotrophs are a bit like us TV watchin' humans in that they absord Carbon. The typical bacterial cell in the liquid mixture is an elongated, often rod-shaped bacteria that is typically .2 microns wide and maybe 4 to 6 microns wide depending on how much duck-weed the poor single-celled creature ate at lunch! Autotrophs use the inorganic carbon just like plants do (that's carbonate or carbon dioxide to the rest of us mortals) These are cocci-shaped bacteria usually .2 - .4 microns in diameter and are a round to oval shape.

What do these bacteria do?
Just like every single living thing on the planet Earth, every cell in the strains of these products have a instilled natural biological directive to eat and reproduce. Every cell, creature, person or living entity must compete with eac other and with predartors. Each strain of bacteria can only do one job, often just like us...according to my wife anyway I'm, only good for a few mundane tasks like taking out the trash!

These bacteria work best when the water pH is between 6 and 8.5. The optimal PH balance is 7.5. When activating your bacteria the temperature should be between 34 degrees F and 104 degrees F or 1 degrees Celcius and 40 degress Celsius..

What do these bacteria eat?
These indicuidual strains are very specific; they will not eat a Number 3 BK Trio, instead each little soldier will digest and attack to consume a certain type of fat, protein, carbohydrate, cellulose or hydrocarbon. Each little cell, once it has been relaesed in to the proper environment will consume the fat, grease oil or animal sludge depending on certain critical variables.

How fast do they grow?
These single celled menaces can grow incredibly quick! A standard population of some good old-fashioned heterotrophic bacteria can double every twenty minutes! This rapid reproduction quickly creates new strains and mutations that cause even more disturbance in the traditional forces!

Is this natural pond bacteria any good?
We have seen a number of dry bacteria that claim to have 1 billion active cells, or 5 billion active cells! The liquid bacteria is guaranteed to have a minimum of 10 to the 11th power of active cells/ml. That is huge! That is 100,000,000,000 active and hungry cells in a single mililiter! We use it, have seen it used, and sell it: it works...that's the bottom line! Of course it has to share a bit of the spotlight with the dry bacteria mixtures but that doesn't lessen the impact you will feel when using the product!

Bacta-Pur® XLG
Bacta-Pur® XLG contains 16 strains of natural, pathogen-free bacteria specifically designed for decomposing organic sediments in ponds. This is what we often call muck or sludge. The voracious organic bacteria in XLG literally consume all organic materials in ponds and are a key tool when we are attempting to re-establish depth in a pond that has an un-wanted accumulation of muck and smelly sludge at the bottom.

Bacta-Pur® XLG is an ideal bacteria in colder waters and we often use it in tandem with a dry bacteria that has certain temperature paramaters that must be respected because the XLG can be added to any water body at any temperature as long as there is not any ice covering the pond. A hole could be cut in the ice for an application if necessary but don't you think that is a bit much? I do!

I often treat the ponds I am taking care of with a dosage of XLG in the Autumn and in the Spring. In a way a pond is like a swimming pool becausea shock treatment at the beginning and end of the season is a really good idea. We would never use chlorine to treat lage or muck in a pond because it can be toxic to life but the use of a natural bacteria can only help in restore the cycle of life because the consumation of nutrients and elements by the bacteria create food for fish, insects and frogs.

When you are doing an end of season cold-water treatment with the XLG to help remove leaves that have fallen in to the pond or lake I recommend about 2 gallons for every surface acre of the XLG followed by another treatment two or three weeks later. So if you have a pond of 1 acre I would treat with 2 gallons as soon as the water temperature reaches 40 degrees Fahrenheit or around 5 degrees Celsius and then follow up with an equal application two or 3 weeks later.

This regime would be repeated in the Spring. As soon as the ice has gone, if you have ice in your location, do a shock-treatment with 2 gallons per surface acre. Follow the initial treatment with an equal-size application in two weeks. This is an ideal shock treatment! The cultures in this natural pond bacteria do an incredible job of keeping waters clear and reducing the muck build-up at the bottom. This is the bacteria that has been so succesfull in doing what they call "bio-dredging" where the use of microbes has replaced the mechanical digging and removal of pond and lake sediments. Pond owners know that there are two common forms of algae that are bound to show their mucky green faces at one time or another in the life of a pond. Often a pond will suffer bouts with algae many times during a season. While there are chemicals to help knock-down algae my approach is to use natural methods of algae control.
